“One of the most prominent features of Melbourne is its population of stately European Elm trees. With over 6000 trees, Melbourne has the largest collection of mature and healthy Elms remaining in the world. Dutch Elm disease has almost completely destroyed the Elm population in the northern hemisphere. Following several years of below average rainfall, Melbourne’s water storages have now become depleted to the extent that they are currently below 40 per cent of capacity.” [www.melbourne.vic.gov.au]

Tree Logic is currently assisting the City of Melbourne in the management of drought conditions and the effects on the trees located in Melbourne's historic parks, gardens and boulevards. In conjunction with the many drought management strategies currently implemented by Council, Tree Logic staff have assisted Council's Parks and Recreation staff through drought monitoring of significant trees and the auditing and design of irrigation systems. Future work will also include supporting council in the ongoing replacement of turf spray systems with drip irrigation lines for the efficient watering of trees in open space.
Some of the innovative water delivery methods currently adopted by council include the use of drip irrigation from water filled safety barriers, flooding within soil berms and deep injection watering. Other water saving practices include mulching and soil amelioration works. Through our monitoring and assessment work, it is hoped that Tree Logic can continue to assist the City of Melbourne in the development of efficient and effective watering strategies for Melbourne’s significant trees.
